I'm just back from another reconnaissance trip to Queenstown before the high wine tour season kicks off with the onset of cruise ship arrivals. I'm always keeping an ear to the ground for the possibility of expansion back to the place I spent so much time in my youth.

John's Wine of the Week : Runner Duck Joy Methode Traditionelle NV

This is a "fermented in the bottle" Sparkling Cremant made of Cabernet France. After being pressed off skin, the base cuvees of three different vintages have been fermented, clarified and racked before being aged and then blended. With the addition of some sugar and Champagne yeast to create the Liquer de Triage" the wine was then fermented for the second time on crown seal for 3 weeks. The wine has then spent two and half years on lees before disgorgement has this has added depth an complexity from yeast Autolysis. A dry sparkling wine with a very fine and persistent bead, it has the faintest hint of pink in color. Faint aromas of raspberry and cherry blossom on the nose and a hint of breadiness. On the palate it is classically full with white peach, raspberry and nectarine intertwined with toast, brioche and savory meal. It's a complex refined and delicious sparkling wine perfect as an aperitif or paired with Crayfish, Crabmeat or Sushimi. It's been an incredible summer and I'm pleased to have retained the title of Number 1 Wine and Food Tour (and the number 2 tour in the whole of Auckland) by TripAdvisor throughout. Most of the clients I get seem to often mention how much history and cultural and economic information they receive on a tour and are surprised to find the depth of wine knowledge imbibed upon them. With a background in the wine industry and decades of Hotel, hospitality and tourism behind that it's not surprising. There are a number of wine tour companies operating where the owner/guides actually have a scant knowledge of what they talking about because none of them has ever actually worked in any position in the wine industry at all. At best you're getting a driver and anyone can do that. That's why when you go to the biggest and most prestigious wine Estate in Auckland like Villa Maria Estate the only Wine Tour brochure you'll see permitted there there is NZWINEPRO. It's the same at Kumeu River Wines, the famous Brajkovich family winery. These companies are very selective about who they endorse and who they are prepared to be represented by and that's why we get private behind the scenes access to barrel rooms and production areas. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2014

This chardonnay is the flagship of Kumeu River Wines. At NZ$30 per bottle from the winery it's very good value. French in style, (Mersault to be specific) and made with natural wild yeasts, it is a delicious and sophisticated food wine. Michael Brajkovich and his assistant of 40 years Nigel Tibbits are the wine makers. At the winery Monday to Friday there is a small team of dedicated people focused on making their superb portfolio of wine, 50% of which is exported to the the UK, USA, Australia and Europe. In New Zealand the Brajovich Family Kumeu River label is seen in the best restaurants and fine wine merchants throughout the country. Mate' Brajkovich, Michael's father was a pioneer and innovator of the New Zealand Wine Industry serving as Chairman of the NZ Wine Institute over many years for which he was awarded an OBE from HRH Queen Elizabeth II

Piha Karekare Rainforest Wine Adventure tour already proving popular

I've reintroduced the Piha Waitakare Ranges tour for 2016/2017 with a new name, some new inclusions and an earlier getaway time and return time. It now visits beautiful KareKare as well for a walk on the beach and a visit to the Karekare falls. Both Piha and Karekare are situated on the wild West Coast and are two of the gems in Auckland's crown as far as naturally beautiful, coastal, beach and rainforest locations are concerned.

As sad as I am to lose 4 years of blogging I am happy enough to at least have my website back end fixed and be able to start the whole process again. Always see your cup as half full and don't sweat the small stuff! Something happened to my website and I suddenly wasn't able to change content. It kept booting me out for no reason I could fathom and with the constantly changing horizon within which I work this was a major issue in order to keep the website up to date and accurate. So while all my old entries are gone, I'll start from scratch and try to keep it fresh with lots of the best recommendations for wines to look for, restaurants to try and things of interest happening in Auckland and around New Zealand.
